Dallas Cowboys fire head coach Wade Phillips

The Dallas Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones on Monday fired head coach Wade Phillips after a devastating loss on Sunday night that extended the losing streak to five games.
The Dallas Cowboys loss 45-7 to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night threatening the Cowboys' chances of reaching the playoffs. In the pre-season Dallas was pointed out as one of the top contenders for winning this season's Super Bowl.
Less than a year ago, Jones gave coach Phillips a two-year contract extension for leading the Dallas Cowboys to their first playoff win in more than ten seasons. He will be replaced in a interim basis by offensive coordinator Jason Garret.
Phillips ended his tenure with the Cowboys with a 35-23 record and winning tow NFC East titles as well as the fore mentioned first playoff victory for the Cowboys since 1996. He is the first coach fired during and ongoing season by Jones since he acquired the team in 1989.
Phillips, who was appointed as head coach in 2007, questioned the passion of the team in tow of the last five games. Many speculated on his possible firing but Jones assured that he will end the season. However, Sunday's loss demonstrated the lack of leadership in the team and that a change was urgently needed.
"There are a lot of people here who are certainly going to suffer and suffer consequences," Jones said after Sunday's defeat. "I'm talking about within the team — players, coaches who have got careers. This is certainly a setback. I know firsthand what it is to have high expectations."
Despite the past successful seasons, the Dallas Cowboys have been involved in several inside disputes among players and many questioned Phillips' ability to handle a locker room full of superstars. However, success came and with NFL's highest payroll this season, GM Jones expected that the Cowboys will be the first team ever to host and actually play the Super Bowl.
