Powerful blast levels Karachi police building killing at least 17

A major explosion leveled a police building in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and injuring at least 115, officials and local TV said.

According to Police, the explosion occurred outside the building of the Central Investigation Department near the chief minister's house, and close to several hotels.

Express News reported that the intensity of the explosion was such that it was heard for many kilometers around and buildings have been damaged up to 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. The explosion left a huge crater four meters (13 feet) deep in front on the building.

Pakistani media said the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility of the attack.
