Tropical storm Tomas forms southeast of Barbados, could threaten Jamaica

Tropical storm Tomas formed in the Atlantic southeast of Barbados on Friday afternoon, meteorologists said.
Tomas formed just before 5 p.m. EDT (2100 UTC) 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Barbados, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, and it has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (40 mph).
Strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Tomas could become a hurricane by Sunday.
